The Cat Pedestal of Majesty
My friend Lila, an inveterate bottom-dollar treasure hunter, showed up at my house one day with a tatty footstool she’d salvaged from the curb outside a neighbor’s house. It was stained with damp and smelled suspicious, but the cat took to it instantly. Audrey enjoys perches that elevate her above the rabble and maximize opportunities for regal poses. I decided to keep the footstool and transform it into a cat pedestal worthy of a true princess.
The first thing I did was to rip off the cushion and covering and respray the legs in gold.
Then I sewed a new cushion using Chez Larsson’s kitty bean bag tutorial. Polystyrene beads hold in body heat, making bean bag cushions extra appealing to cats. I ran a tack through the center to create a slight indentation suitable for nestling.
Then I covered the cushion with scrap velvet in royal purple, fastening with brass upholstery tacks.
I fudged the corners but what the hell, the cats won’t notice. Behold! the finished Cat Pedestal of Majesty:
I made it with Audrey in mind, but it turned out to be a surprise hit with the normally sullen and aloof Yuri. Well, he is an exiled Russian aristocrat. This is probably what he’s used to.
I showed it to Audrey and she was all like, “Finally.”

Nothing I do for them seems to arouse surprise or gratitude. Heated cat beds, gourmet food…
I love how she’s just sitting there watching you make it. Did you tell her what it was going to be?
Oh that would be Russian aristoCAT wouldn’t it!
It looks wonderful and your cats look so happy!
Wah-waaah! You’re right, I can’t believe I missed that one!
